National Bird Of Guatemala
This specie of bird is known for their colourful plumage that differs substantially between sexes. Male quetzal's have green plumes, red breast and belly, white under tail., black wings, while females have dull and shorter tail. Quetzal's are also known as a symbol of freedom, it may die with hunger but never live in captivity. In history Quetzalcoatl was the God of rain and wind, and known for the creator of world and humanity. Quetzal was also the national bird of Guatemala. It is only bird on land with the name Resplendent. Resplendent means shinny colour.
Quetzal's Habitat
Quetzal's are mostly found in lush vegetation and in very moist rain forests. They live in clouded rain forests. They often choose high mountain ranges from 1000-4000 feet. They like to live in cool areas. They founded in Guatemala Southern Mexico, Honduras, EI Salvador and Costa Rica from south to western panama. Quetzal's have average life span of 5-10 years.
Physical Characteristics Of Quetzal's
It is the only bird on land which have word resplendent, which means shinny colour that attract attention of peoples. The feather's of resplendent Quetzal's are mostly green or golden green. The breast and belly of male quetzal's are reddish. Female quetzal's have grey breast and belly and have dull colour then male's. The blue green tail is white under males and females have black. Their are suited to camouflage under rainy condition. They are strongly sexually dimorphic and parts of female plumage are dark brown or grey.
Importance Of Quetzal's
Egg Lying Period
They make nests in holes of decayed trunks and lay eggs in it. During egg lying period, parents rotate their heads side to side in order to see threats around their nest. This process is known as ''Bowing In'' and ends when the Chicks hatch. The young Quetzals start flying in month, but their tail take three years to complete its length. Female bird lay two eggs which are pale blue and spherical. Duties are fully shared between male and female.
Quetzel's Behaviour
Quetzel's like to live alone. They spend most of their time on dark trees. They only came in pair for mating and caring for their young's. They are the only bird that are very quite. In Mayan culture the birds are famous for singing sweet songs but this bird is against to all these birds. They call only in very sunny and very windy days. The male has very louder voice then female. They are Shy.
