Gorillas: Gentle Giants
Understanding The Behaviour
Gorillas are gentle giant's and display many human like emotions and behaviours such as laughing and sadness. Gorillas share 98.3% of their genetic code with humans, this makes them our closest cousins after chimpanzee's and bonobos. The gorilla is the largest of all primates. Gorillas are very social animals and live in form of groups. Gorillas are very clever and seem to be making and using tools. Adult males are known as silver backs.
Gorilla's Habitat
Gorillas are of two types Eastern gorilla and Western gorilla. Gorillas were mostly live in tropical forests. Tropical forests are characterized as having little variance and length of day light. How ever rainfall varies considerably in the tropics and is primary factor as to the type of vegetation that grows in an area. Gorillas are typically live in lowland tropical rainforest of central Africa. Some subspecies are found in mountain and bamboo forests. Gorilla's spend 14 hours in foraging and feeding and 10 hours in resting.
Clever Minded
Intelligence Gorillas are considered as highly intelligent. A few individuals in captivity, such a s koko, have been taught a subset of sign language. Like other great apes, gorillas can laugh and grieve, having rich emotions which make strong family bond. They also know for making and using tools. It is said that gorillas can think about past and future. Gorillas use stick to guage depth of water. They use Bamboo as ladder for infant climbs. Gorillas have been seen for the first time using sticks to eat ants without being stung. Gorillas are less intelligent then chimpanzees. They have 16 different calls.
Physical Abilities
Gorillas are very powerful and strong. An adult gorilla is six time more powerful then an adult human. They are able to lift, break and squeeze heavy objects like rocks. The silver back gorillas can lift and through up to 815 kgs. Gorillas have very muscular human like body. Gorillas are very friendly and can't attack on humans untill they were threatened or if humans behave in wrong way.
Breeding Season
Gorillas have no special breeding season. They will mate and breed throughout the year. The group leader will mate with females member of their group. They mate like humans. They were polygamous because they mate with several females. They will not mate until they got silver back. Like humans gorillas also sex with their homesexuals. Their gestation period is also similar to humans, which is 8.5 - 9 months.
