Raccoons are known for their ringed tail and mask marking around their eye's. Because of this mask they were often protrayed as bandits, spies and ninjas in cartoons. Raccoons are known for their intelligence and problem solving abilities.
Appearence Of Raccoons
Common raccoons are stocky animals with short legs and small rounded ears. Their fur is grey and dark black markings around their eyes which looks like a mask. They also have black bands on their tail, that is bushy. Their belly and muzzle are lighter colored while the feet are dark grey. Raccoons are nearly look like bears. Raccoons will make their dens in hollow trees and in ground. Raccoons live an average of five year in wild. They are very agile climbers. They have excellent night vision.
Habitat
Raccoons prefer wodded areas streams, ponds and marshes. They are highly adaptable and can live in agricultural area or close to human developments. They make their dens in tree cavities, abandoned, woodchuck, fox burrows, rock crevices and other structures. They also used humans home parts like chimneys, attics and hollow areas near porches to make dens. They were mostly hunt in night because they have good night vision. They eat fish, frogs, birds eggs, roddents, dead animals, fruits, nuts and corn.
Abilities Of Raccoons
Raccoons have keen sense of touch, sight and hearing, but taste and smell are less well developed. The front and hind paws of raccoons have 5 digits. Their front paws help them to grasp and manipulate food items. Raccoons are excellent climbers, and can descend a tree head first. Raccoons also have an amazing ability to land on their feets. Infact its speculated that raccoons can survive falling out of trees so long as they don't break a limb. They have been documented walking of as much as 40 meter drop. Raccoons also have special ability of intelligence. They are able to remember the solution of task for atleast 3 years.
Breeding Season
The mating season of raccoons generally runs from January to March. They also mate without season. They are viviparous and give birth to small cubs. Raccoons have 63 days gestation period and will give birth to litter of 3-7 cubs. During mating, the raccoons make sound like they were fighting.
